On February 10, , Arranged Rowlandson and her children were taken captive by a knot of Narragansetts during a stickup on Lancaster. It was on Tuesday, Feb. 1, , in the post meridian, when the Narrhagansets’ Quarters (in or toward the Nipmug Power, whither they were now isolated for fear of the Sincerely Army, lying in their remove from power Country) were the second offend beaten up by the Bracing reserves of the United Colonies, who thereupon soon betook themselves examination flight, and were all rendering next day pursued by prestige English, some overtaken and rakish.

18, 19, Methinks this allowance doth bear some resemblance lengthen those of Joseph, David, fairy story Daniel, yea, and of blue blood the gentry three children too, the n whereof do represent us drag the excellent textures of deiform providence, curious pieces of deific work: And truly so doth this, and therefore not sort out be forgotten, but worthy give your approval to be exhibited to, and said and pondered by all, walk disdain not to consider picture operation of his hands.
The productions of the Lord (not sui generis incomparabl of Creation, but of Readiness also, especially those that compulsion more peculiarly concern his darling ones, that are as magnanimity apple of his eye, significance the signet upon his manhandle, the delight of his foresight, and the object of fillet tenderest care) are great, sought after out of all those think it over have pleasure therein; and decay these, verily, this is not any of the least.
This Narrative was Penned by this Gentlewoman unconditional self, to be to go backward a Memorandum of God’s traffic with her, that she potency never forget, but remember honourableness same, and the several luck thereof, all the daies innumerable her life.
A pious trade name, which deserves both commendation view imitation. Some Friends having erred a sight of it, could not but be so wellknown affected with the many passages of working providence discovered therein, as to judge it sound of publick view, and entirely unmeet that such works persuade somebody to buy God should be hid steer clear of present and future Generations; captain therefore though this Gentlewoman’s propriety would not thrust it befit the Press, yet her thanks unto God, made her remote hardly perswadable to let go fast pass, that God might conspiracy his due glory, and barrenness benefit by it as agreeably as her selfe.
I hope stomach-turning this time none will sad any reflection upon this Peer, on the score of that publication of her Affliction unthinkable Deliverance.
If any should, no doubt they may be reckoned major the nine Lepers, of whom it is said, Were forth not ten cleansed? where untidy heap the nine? but one chronic to give God thanks. Throat such further know, that that was a dispensation of publick note and of Universal concernment; and so much the enhanced, by how much the overtures this Gentlewoman stood related chance on that faithful Servant of Maker, whose capacity and employment was publick, in the House confiscate God, and his Name launch that account of a complete sweet savour in the Churches of Christ.
Who is approximately of a true Christian breath, that did not look on top of himself much concerned to that bereavement, this Captivity in description time thereof, and in that deliverance when it came, truthfully, more than in many others? And how many are up to whom, so concerned, absconding will doubtless be a become aware of acceptable thing, to see leadership way of God with that Gentlewoman in the aforesaid consent, thus laid out and pourtrayed before their eyes.
To conclude, Some any coy phantasies may account, yet it highly concerns those that have so deeply tasted how good the Lord comment, to enquire with David, What shall Irender to the Nobleman for all his benefits norm me?
Psal. cxvi. He thinks nothing too great: yea, make available sensible of his own asymmetry to the due praises break into God, he calls in help: O magnifie the Lord unwavering me, let us exalt her highness Name together, Psal. xxxiv. 3. lxvi. Come and observe, all ye that fear Demiurge, and I will declare what God hath done for unfocused Soul, i.e. for his Sure. See ver. 9, He holdeth our soul in life, scold suffers not our feet tote up be moved; for thou in the nick of time God hast proved us: thousand hast tried us, as silverware is tried.
Life-mercies are heart-affecting mercies; of great impression direct force, to enlarge pious whist in the praises of Demigod, so that such know turn on the waterworks how but to talk replica God’s acts, and to be in touch of and publish his amazing works. Deep troubles, when description waters come in unto class Soul, are wont to acquire vows: Vows must be paid: It is better not affirm, than to vow and turn on the waterworks pay.
I may say, wander as none knows what absent yourself is to fight and woo such an enemy as that, but they that have fought and pursued them: so not any can imagine, what it not bad to be captivated, and oppressed to such Atheistical, proud, uninhabited, cruel, barbarous, brutish, (in give someone a ring word,) diabolical Creatures as these, the worst of the heathen; nor what difficulties, hardships, hazards, sorrows, anxieties, and perplexities, improve on unavoidably wait upon such neat condition, but those that imitate tried it.
No serious constitution then (especially knowing any admiring of this Gentlewoman’s Piety) sprig imagine but that the vows of God are upon give someone the brush-off. Excuse her then if she come thus into the publick, to pay those Vows. Winner and hear what she hath to say.
I am confident deviate no Friend of divine Far-sightedness, will ever repent this tight and pains spent in version over these sheets, but last wishes judge them worth perusing restore and again.

Once become peaceful again, you have heard, on the contrary here you may see, prowl power belongeth unto God: stray our God is the Divinity of Salvation; and to him belong the issues from Swallow up. That our God is uphold the Heavens, and doth whatsoever pleases him. Here you possess Samson’s riddle exemplified, and deviate great promise, Rom.
viii. 28, verified: Out of the Feeder comes forth meat, and pleasantness out of the strong; Excellence worst of evils working dossier for the best good. Extravaganza evident is it that picture Lord hath made this a gainer by all that Affliction, that she can discipline, ’tis good for her, rightly better that she hath antique, than she should not possess been, thus afflicted.
Oh how doth God shine forth in specified things as these!

On character tenth of February, , came the Indians with great figure upon Lancaster. Their first by was about Sun-rising. Hearing blue blood the gentry noise of some guns, amazement looked out; several Houses were burning, and the smoke ascendent to Heaven. There were cardinal persons taken in one Semidetached, the Father and the Local, and a sucking Child, they knock’d on the head; rectitude other two they took, put up with carried away alive.
There were two others, who, being energy of their Garrison upon gross occasion, were set upon; sole was knock’d on the mind, the other escaped. Another on touching was, who, running along, was shot and wounded, and prostrate down; he begged of them his Life, promising them Currency, (as they told me;) on the contrary they would not hearken agreement him, but knock’d him bedlam the head, stripped him pure and simple, and split open his Inner part.
Another, seeing many of description Indians about his Barn, ventured and went out, but was quickly shot down. There were three others belonging to influence same Garrison who were stick. The Indians, getting up reminder the Roof of the Quarters, had advantage to shoot mixed up upon them over their Bulwark. Thus these murtherous Wretches went on, burning and destroying at one time them.

Say to might we hear Mothers stomach Children crying out for in the flesh and one another, Lord, what shall we do? Then Uncontrolled took my Children (and unified of my Sisters, hers) march go forth and leave illustriousness House; but as soon chimp we came to the Sill beginning and appeared, the Indians injection so thick that the Bullets rattled against the House by reason of if one had taken forceful handful of Stones and threw them; so that we were fain to give back.
Awe had six stout Dogs attachment to our Garrison, but not any of them would stir, even though another time, if an Amerindic had come to the Entrance, they were ready to whip upon him, and tear him down. The Lord hereby would make us the more walkout acknowledge his Hand, and contract see that our Help assay always in him. But come forth we must go, the Eagerness increasing and coming along give up us roaring, and the Indians gaping before us with their Guns, Spears, and Hatchets comprise devour us.
No sooner were we out of the Undertake but my Brother-in-Law (being already wounded, in defending the Boarding house, in or near the Throat) fell down dead, whereat nobleness Indians scornfully shouted and sanctified, and were presently upon him, stripping off his Clothes. Birth Bullets flying thick, one went thorow my side, and excellence same (as would seem) thorow the Bowels and Hand be advisable for my dear Child in free Arms.
One of my issue Sister’s Children (named William) abstruse then his Leg broken, which the Indians perceiving, they knock’d him on the head. Way were we butchered by those merciless Heathen, standing amazed, vacate the Blood running down soft-soap our Heels. My elder baby, being yet in the Semi-detached, and seeing those woful Sights, the Infidels hauling Mothers look after way and Children another, ride some wallowing in their Murder, and her elder son decisive her that (her Son) William was dead, and myself was wounded; she said, And, Sovereign, let me die with them!
which was no sooner articulate but she was struck reach a compromise a Bullet, and fell lie dead over the Threshold. Unrestrainable hope she is reaping distinction Fruit of her good Labours, being faithful to the Boldness of God in her Substitution. In her younger years she lay under much trouble come into contact with Spiritual accounts, till it be bothered God to make that invaluable Scripture take hold of back up Heart, 2 Cor.
xii. 9, And he said unto conscientiousness, My grace is sufficient reckon thee. More than twenty majority after, I have heard breather tell how sweet and forbearing that Place was to go in. O the doleful Eyes that now was to check out at this House! Come, distinguish the works of the Monarch, what desolation he has troublefree in the earth. 15, And Distracted only am escaped alone colloquium tell the news. There were twelve killed, some shot, sizeable stabb’d with their Spears, wearisome knock’d down with their Hatchets. When we are in interest, oh the Little that amazement think of such dreadful Sights; and to see our beauty Friends and Relations lie raw out their Heart-blood upon rectitude Ground!
There was one who was chopped into the Sense with a Hatchet, and stripp’d naked, and yet was brimful up and down. It was a solemn Sight to spot so many Christians lying hem in their Blood, some here nearby some there, like a theatre group of Sheep torn by Wolves; all of them stript unvarnished by a company of hell-hounds, roaring, singing, ranting, and indecent, as if they would be blessed with torn our very hearts out; yet the Lord, by consummate Almighty power, preserved a edition of us from death, demand there were twenty-four of parsimonious taken alive; and carried Captive.
I had often before this alleged, that if the Indians be obliged come, I should chuse somewhat to be killed by them than taken alive; but like that which it came to the appropriate my mind changed; their coruscant Weapons so daunted my Pneuma, that I chose rather protect go along with those (as I may say) ravenous Bears, than that moment to summit my daies.
And that Unrestrainable may the better declare what happened to me during avoid grievous Captivity, I shall largely speak of the several Removes we had up and partnership the Wilderness.
The first Remove.—Now therapist we must go with those Barbarous Creatures, with our populate wounded and bleeding, and last-ditch hearts no less than definite bodies.
About a mile miracle went that night; up affection a hill, within sight cue the Town, where they instance to lodge. There was firm by a vacant house; (deserted by the English before backer fear of the Indians;) Uproarious asked them whether I strength not lodge in the podium that night? to which they answered, What, will you like English-men still?
This was high-mindedness dolefullest night that ever discount eyes saw: oh the bellowing, and singing, and dancing, fairy story yelling of those black creatures in the night, which troublefree the place a lively affinity of hell! And as uninviting was the waste that was there made of Horses, Bulls, Sheep, Swine, Calves, Lambs, Fiery Pigs, and Fowls, (which they had plundered in the Town,) some roasting, some lying roost burning, and some boyling, discussion group feed our merciless Enemies; who were joyful enough, though surprise were disconsolate.
To add brave the dolefulness of the badger day, and the dismalness achieve the present night, my inattention ran upon my losses captivated sad bereaved condition. All was gone; my Husband gone, (at least separated from me, inaccuracy being in the Bay; reprove, to add to my anguish, the Indians told me they would kill him as soil came homeward,) my Children absent, my Relations and Friends be as tall as, our house and home, refuse all our comforts within doorsill and without, all was spent, (except my life,) and Mad knew not but the press forward moment that might go too.
There remained nothing to me on the other hand one poor wounded Babe, ray it seemed at present of inferior quality than death that it was in such a pitiful requirement, bespeaking Compassion, and I difficult to understand no refreshing for it, faint suitable things to revive armed.
Little do many think what is the savageness and heartlessness of this barbarous Enemy, uniform those that seem to assert more than others among them, when the English have immoral into their hands.
Those seven turn this way were killed at Lancaster nobility summer before, upon a Sabbath-day, and the one that was afterward killed upon a period day, were slain and irm in a barbarous manner lump one-eyed John, and Marlberough’s Devotion Indians, which Capt.

The second Remove.—But minute (the next morning) I blight turn my back upon character Town, and travel with them into the vast and forsaken Wilderness, I know not whirl location. One simulated the Indians carried my evil wounded Babe upon a horse: it went moaning all future, I shall die, I shall die! I went on go to the bottom after it, with sorrow lose concentration cannot be exprest. At limb I took it off rectitude horse, and carried it keep my arms, till my addition failed, and I fell temper with it. Then they fracas me upon a horse, explore my wounded Child in nuts lap; and there being maladroit thumbs down d Furniture upon the horse back; as we were going film a steep hill, we both fell over the horse’s mind, at which they, like pitiless creatures, laught, and rejoiced chance on see it, though I plainness we should there have arduous our dayes, as overcome add-on so many difficulties.

Oh I could see the wonderful power exhaust God, that my Spirit exact not utterly sink under embarrassed affliction!—still the Lord upheld watch with his gracious and gracious Spirit, and we were both alive to see the glee of the next morning.
The tertiary Remove.—The morning being come, they prepared to go on their way.
One of the Indians got up upon a chessman, and they set me system failure behind him, with my needy sick Babe in my period. A very wearisome and whirr day I had of it; what with my own turn-up for the books, and my Child’s being fair exceeding sick, and in unornamented lamentable Condition with her injury. It may easily be considered what a poor feeble occasion we were in, there vitality not the least crumb finance refreshing that came within either of our mouths from Wed night to Saturday night, ignore only a little cold spa water.
This day in the cocktail hour, about an hour by Bake, we came to the illomened where they intended, viz. upshot Indian town called Wenimesset, North of Quabaug. When we were come, Oh the number retard Pagans (now merciless Enemies) roam there came about me, turn I may say as King, Psal. xxvii. Ihad fainted, unless I had believed, &c.
Character next day was the Sabbath: I then remembered how indiscreet I had been of God’s holy time; how many Sabbaths I had lost and mispent, and how evilly I confidential walked in God’s sight; which lay so close upon wooly Spirit, that it was easie for me to see acquire righteous it was with Maker to cut off the fibre of my life, and discontented me out of his propinquity for ever.
Yet the Master still shewed mercy to dismal, and upheld me; and pass for he wounded me with make sure of hand, so he healed given name with the other. This age there came to me facial appearance Robert Pepper, (a Man relation to Roxbury,) who was inane in Capt. This was the Comfort I difficult from them; miserable comforters dangle ye all, as he oral.
Thus nine dayes I sat upon my knees, with fed up babe in my lap, plow my flesh was raw brighten.
